How to Keep Fit on your Honeymoon
Your honeymoon is supposed to be a magical, carefree time, when you can cast aside the thousand mundane worries and tribulations of everyday life and make the most of celebrating a wonderful beginning to married life. Whether you have decided to honeymoon in Morocco, Mauritius or Malaysia, you are probably hoping to spend several blissful days in a luxury hotel, eating plenty of delicious exotic food, lazing in a plush king-sized bed, maybe strolling hand in hand along a pristine sugar-white beach… but have you given much thought to honeymoon health and fitness? While it may not seem like an issue, for some honeymooners staying trim and healthy will be an area of concern. Thankfully there are several ways you can minimize the impact of long sunny days spent lying by the pool with a cocktail by your elbow or lazing in bed with a bowlful of chocolate-dipped strawberries.
Beware of the buffet
One of the many delightful aspects of a honeymoon is your luxury resort’s extravagant breakfast buffet! Packed full of culinary delights, from made-to-your-liking omelets to bacon, waffles, pancakes and flavourful local specialties – perhaps curries, or fried rice – the buffet is a daily source of temptation. Loading your plate with croissants and pastries on the first few days of your honeymoon won’t affect your dress size, but if you want to head back home roughly the same size as you left it, then try to steer toward the healthier options, such as muesli, granola, wholegrain toast, yoghurt and fresh fruit.
Take a chill pill
Honeymoons are supposed to be about slowing down and relaxing, taking time to enjoy your new spouse. But if you have put together a busy itinerary, packing in a plethora of sights and attractions, you may find yourself more stressed than serene – and stress can trigger your hunger and cause you to start comfort eating, or snacking constantly to keep up your energy levels. Make sure you carve out plenty of time to rest during your honeymoon, in between island hopping or visiting another ancient temple.
Take advantage of your hotel’s facilities
Many honeymoon hotels have a variety of leisure and sports facilities on offer, ranging from tennis courts to well-equipped 24-hour fitness centres, golf courses and water sports facilities. Staying active won’t be an issue – and you can have plenty of fun doing it. Burn off calories swimming in your hotel’s sparkling pool, go jet-skiing and canoeing, do a spin class, and then unwind with a trip to the resort spa; maybe even try a complimentary yoga session to soothe strained muscles and help you stay flexible.
Get out and about
While your hotel or resort is sure to offer plenty of ways to stay active and healthy, another great way to keep fit is by exploring the local area and checking out its natural and sports-related attractions and activities. Go horseback riding on the beach, try zip-lining, cycling and hiking, do an eco-adventure tour or savour a speedboat tour of the local islands if you’re staying somewhere tropical. Even just going on plenty of long, scenic walks is a great way to keep up your fitness and energy levels – and if you walk hand in hand, it can be super-romantic too; just the thing for a honeymoon.
